I don’t know about you, but there’s something, deep down inside of me in my core, that is concerned about the impact that of all of these gadgets and gizmos available to us today, are going to have on us, that supposedly to “make our lives easier”.
More to the point, I’m kind of worried about how the long-term affect our technological world is going to have on us human beings. I see a world, 50 years from now, a thousand years say, where we have forgotten basic skills of today, because we rely so heavily on technology.
I was with my friend Scott and his daughter today, and he was talking about a recent school tour he did. He was walking around and looking at the classrooms and corridors that will become more than familiar to his daughter next year, the campus principal talked about how as a school, they have moved away from each child having a personal device which they have as a study aid. Instead now, each classroom, where needed, now have their own computer terminals, which any child can access if they need to – and not many were being used according to Scott.
Now the reason for this interestingly, is because the school noticed a down turn in the kids’ ability to write – handwriting skills were diminishing and in some cases, handwriting was illegible.
The problem here is, when exams are being taken by children and the examiner marking the papers afterwards, cannot read the answers, the examiner hasn’t got time to try and work out what was written, so he or she, simply strikes through the writing as unanswered or incorrect!
Imagine that – imagine how many of our children’s exam papers are being marked down, simply because handwriting couldn’t be read!
Another problem the school noticed was that children were losing the ability to spell and to notice spelling errors; simply because word processor applications – both computer based and mobile device based, will correct grammar and spelling as you go along. Children were becoming blind to the errors and were simply only aware that a correction had been made by the computer or device.
So two, maybe three skills alone, were being lost by over use of the word processor for example. That’s just a word processor! How many technological devices are taking away basic human skills – or have the potential to?
The school recognise that technology has a place, but also realises that it could and will have a negative impact on the children’s development, if the use of technology doesn’t go un-checked!
And I wonder, as much as I love technology and marvel at it – I mean, how do you think I’m writing this blog right now? What is the long term future of human kind, if we carry on over relying and over using technology to perform basic tasks and in doing so, forget our most valuable skills, such as reading and writing?
I don’t know about you, but I probably now mostly communicate (non verbally) using a computer or mobile device, where I don’t have to pick up a pen or pencil to write, I simply hit keys on a keyboard or tap digits on a touch screen display.
Hell I don’t even have to scribble my signature to buy goods anymore, I either “tap and go” or enter a pin number!
If children are our long-term future, then we have to ensure that our children continue to carry these basic skills forwards for generations to come.
Children, as Scott’s future high school have also recognised, must hold onto their ability to write by hand.
Children love new stuff right, it’s exciting for them?
So why not give them a great, beautiful looking pen to take to school to write with?
And kids don’t necessarily see the same value in things as adults do (and vice versa). So it doesn’t have to cost a fortune – it just has to appeal to your child’s sense of what is cool and what isn’t – now that’s another mystery isn’t it?
